How we calculate pedicab revenue potential

Across this site we say a Xion pedicab has "$30,000–$35,000 revenue potential per pedicab per year" and that "payback is typically under 12 months". This page explains where those numbers come from, what they include, and what they leave out, so you can judge them against your own market.

These are not earnings, income or profit figures, and they are not a promise.

The $30,000–$35,000 figure is gross revenue collected on one pedicab in a year, before driver pay and before any operating costs. It comes from the results of one Xion operator, EZ Pedicabs in Kansas City. We do not yet track the results of other Xion buyers, so we cannot tell you how many operators reach this figure. Many new operators bring in less, especially in their first year, and some lose money.

Your results depend on your market, permits, season, hours, rates, drivers and how you run the business.

Where the number comes from

The figure is based on the per-cab gross revenue reported to us by EZ Pedicabs, owned by Atticus Sloan. EZ Pedicabs launched in Kansas City, Missouri in March 2024 with 2 Xion pedicabs and grew to 8 cabs and 20+ drivers in 14 months. It is the only pedicab operator in its market, which means it has no direct competition. Results in a market with competing operators, permit caps or a shorter season can be lower.

It is one operator's results. It is not an average of all Xion customers, and it is not a guarantee of what you will see.

The assumptions behind it

Assumption What the figure assumes
Operating schedule The cab runs daily through the busy season and on weekends in the off-season, with drivers available for those shifts.
Market A downtown and entertainment district with nightlife, sports and convention traffic (Kansas City), and no competing pedicab operator.
Ride rates $15 per passenger per 15 minutes for rides; $50–$80 per person for tours.
Advertising Wrap contracts of $500–$2,000 per vehicle per month when a sponsor is signed. Not every cab carries a paid wrap all year.
Events Event contracts of $1,500–$25,000+ per event. That is the whole contract, usually shared across several cabs, not a per-cab amount.
What counts as revenue Everything collected on the cab: fares, tours, wrap fees and event contracts, before driver pay and costs.

What the figure leaves out

Gross revenue is not what you keep. Before you see a profit, you pay for:

  • Drivers. In most pedicab businesses the drivers keep a large share of the fares and tips, or pay a shift fee and keep the rest. This is often the biggest cost.
  • Insurance. Commercial pedicab insurance runs about $2,400 a year per cab.
  • Permits and licensing, which vary by city and can be capped or unavailable.
  • Maintenance, tires, brakes and batteries, plus charging and secure storage.
  • Financing, if you finance: about $820 a month for the $40,500 starter fleet on a 60-month, $0-down estimate for qualified buyers.
  • Startup costs such as shipping, branding and setup. EZ Pedicabs' initial investment was about $75,000–$80,000 for its first 2–3 cabs, including shipping and insurance.
  • Taxes, marketing and your own time.

What "payback typically under 12 months" means

It compares the price of a cab ($13,500 for a 3-seat, $15,000 for a 6-seat) with the gross revenue potential above. It does not subtract driver pay or operating costs. Once you take out your costs, your payback can be longer than 12 months, and in a slow market or a short season it can be much longer.

What changes the numbers most

  • Tourism, nightlife and event traffic in your city
  • Season length and weather
  • Permits, caps and where cabs are allowed to operate
  • Competition from other pedicab operators
  • How many hours you can staff with reliable drivers
  • Your rates and whether you sign wrap sponsors and event contracts

Before you buy

  • Check your city's permit rules and caps before ordering.
  • Build your own budget with your local rates, insurance quote and driver pay, and review it with an accountant or attorney.
